Frenchfield off to a great start

The first running of the new A W Jenkinson Forest Products Frenchfield Horse Trials concluded successfully with considerable praise for the going, terrain, organisation and spectator friendly views.  Blessed with dry weather throughout the weekend while most of the country continued to suffer prolonged rain, Frenchfield put on a show in cold but bright conditions and was appreciated by all those attending.  The results provided some remarkable wins for locally based riders with Claire Light from Cockermouth taking two wins on Saturday riding Ruby Red II and Lovely Lady II and Mark Davidson from High Hesket riding Helsington Mad Moment in the BE90 classes and, Jennifer Bowman (nee Pearson) from Penrith winning BE105 Section G on Alison Noble’s Rockybalboa. Professional riders Heidi Woodhead and Martin Johnson along with the talented Bella Innes Kerr from the Borders took the Santa Rita Wines BE100 Sections on the first day.  John Thornton from High Hesket and Francesca Weymouth from Bampton were well placed 2nd and 4th respectively in BE105 Section H both riding horses previously produced by Sam Arthur Magennis from Abbeytown.  On Sunday Olympic rider Nicola Wilson took the highest level class BE100 Section O and local riders Sarah A Jones and Emma Atkins enjoyed 2nd and 6th in the same class.

The undulating terrain tested the 400 or so attending horses fitness and caught many riders unbalanced over the newly prepared courses with double clears and cross country rounds inside the optimum time few and far between – and all despite near perfect ground conditions.  No doubt at the second running of these trials in September competitors will be more prepared later in the season and the event will be equally competitive.

Huge thanks went out to the army of volunteers who helped judge, steward and control the event and to the Officials and professional services for providing a safe and rewarding event.  It was pleasing to see members of the public attending to watch from the elevated site as riders traversed the course.
